17 KPIs to Measure the Impact of Public Relations Efforts Part #3

(Part 3 of 4)

Public relations is a key driver of brand visibility, reputation and engagement, but PR effectiveness is notoriously difficult to gauge. To measure the true impact of these efforts, setting relevant KPIs or key performance indicators can help identify and highlight which strategies and tactics are most effective for a brand or client.

  1. Earned Media Value or EMV

We focus exclusively on earned media value when measuring PR success. EMV estimates the monetary value of media coverage gained through PR efforts, comparing it to the cost of paid advertising for similar exposure. This metric is crucial to us because it directly reflects the effectiveness of our campaigns in generating awareness, credibility and influence without relying on paid placements.

  1. Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the most important KPI for measuring PR impact. Measuring how PR efforts translate into actual customer actions—such as sign-ups or purchases—provides direct insight into the business value generated. This metric ensures PR is aligned with revenue-driving activities, making it essential for growth-focused evaluation.

  1. Reputational Health

PR impact has been notoriously tough to measure and evaluate. While the reputational health of a brand or business should be on every leader’s dashboard, it seldom is. Finding meaningful ways to quantify a collective of goodwill, sentiment, affinity and trust is key.

  1. What Matters Most To Each Client

The most important KPI in assessing PR impact varies for each client, as it depends on their primary goals or needs. For some, media coverage or brand mentions might be key, while others may prioritize engagement, website traffic or lead generation. Identifying the right KPI ensures we’re measuring success based on what matters most to the client, making PR efforts more targeted and effective.
