Experience Authentic Ubud Craftsmanship at HOSHINOYA Bali
Introducing Tenun Cagcag Traditional Weaving Tour

Bali, September 2023. Textiles and ceremonial cloths have been at the forefront of Bali’s traditions for thousands of years. HOSHINOYA Bali invites guests to experience an authentic weaving workshop and meet the local artisans through their latest activity offering, Tenun Cagcag Traditional Weaving Tour.

Guests can witness the weaving of “Tenun Cagcag” cloth, which is indigenous to Ubud and was once reserved for Balinese nobles and religious ceremonies. ‘Tenun’ means weaving, and ‘Cagcag’ is the sound made by the wooden loom during the weaving process. Hand-looms clack and clap, weaving length-upon-length of vegetable-dyed threads, form the beautifully distinctive patterns. The motifs and patterns found in the fabric showcase exceptional artistry, drawing inspiration from the local surroundings, such as plant and animal forms.

See firsthand the incredible skills of Ubud’s master weavers, learn about their techniques, and discover the stories behind each piece of fabric. Embark on a cultural immersion of a lifetime, exploring the heart of Ubud’s local textile culture and the rich traditions of the Balinese unique villages.

With a panoramic view of Ubud, HOSHINOYA Bali’s Tenun Cagcag Traditional Weaving Tour brings a distinctive experience, an invitation to knowledge, and travel in the form of an initiatory journey that takes visitors to the heart of Bali’s vibrant culture and heritage. The activity is part of HOSHINOYA Bali’s ongoing initiative to share glimpses of the “Unknown Ubud” and their rooted philosophy of preserving Balinese culture from within.

HOSHINOYA Bali’s carefully curated cultural immersion lineup includes:

  • Drop off and pick up at the artisan workshop.
  • Tour Guide to explain the process and interact with the artisan
  • A 30-minute Tenun Cagcag weaving demonstration
  • Camilan time: Traditional Balinese snacks and coffee/tea.
  • Option to join offering prayers at the artisan’s family temple.

Available from September 1st, 2023 onwards, booking in advance is required.

Discover this unique cultural experience and unlock a whole new world of heritage. Book now for a journey through time and traditions connecting guests to Bali’s lesser-known culture through traditional weaving and textiles.

General Manager of HOSHINOYA Bali, Ryuichi Karakawa comments “We take pride in showcasing a unique Balinese heritage to our guests since the Tenun Cagcag Traditional Weaving Tour offers a refined yet traditional method of weaving passed down through generations. We would like to take action in preserving this skill that is fading away and support the current and future generations of Ubud artisans through our guest experience and cultural immersion.”
