About Garuda Wisnu Kencana Statue

GWK projection to become a major cultural attraction, requires it to be designed meticulously and fulfilling public service standards. Various engineering solutions are applied into GWK. Its structure is complied with (the latest) 2012 earthquake regulation, the physical can withstand strong wind, and GWK as a tall building can become a lightning rod and function as faraday frame, where all electricity will be absorbed by the statue skin made out of copper and brass.

Various technical tests are carried out so the GWK statue can stand solid, starting from structure and soil type of the construction location, and the findings of cavity. Cement is injected into the cavities to a depth of 10 meters. Concrete foundation is made with thickness of 2.2 meters to carry weight up to 3,000 tons. Considering the foundation thickness and raising temperature which can potentially crack the foundation, a total of 43,024 ice blocks are used to neutralize the concrete temperature during casting process.

The statue weight is not placed on the platform of the pedestal. Its entire weight is channeled through a core construction in the pedestal with concrete wired sized 30 x 30 meters with a shear wall height of 50 centimeters. This shear wall reaches a certain height combined with steel construction. With this more flexible steel, the entire construction will not shift when the ground is shaken or blown by the wind. This combination makes the statue rigid enough, with little possibility of metal fatique due to multiple shifting structures.

The Balinese iconography details and complex shape makes GWK one of the most complex statue in the world, especially with its open style principle and can be accessed by the public. GWK statue not only becomes a statue that is visited due to its symbolic value, but is also designed within a complex and is supported by various cultural tourism facilities, garden, restaurant and ample parking areas, which can be accessed by a number of people at one time.

  • Construction period started in August 2013 – July 2018.
  • The statue skin material is a mix of brass and copper.
  • The green coloring on the skin is the oxidation effect of patina.
  • There are 754 modules in the statue.
  • There are 25 horizontal segments in the statue.
  • The steel weighs 2,000 tons.
  • The Statue skin weighs 900 tons.
  • The number of steel rods used are 21,000 pieces.
  • Used 170,000 pieces of bolts.
  • The statue is designed to last for 100 years with wind resilience of 2.5 kPa.
